Francesca's Italian Kitchen, Wanaka

93 Ardmore Street
Otago 9305

Just off the lakeside Ardmore Street in Wanaka, Francesca's Italian Kitchen is tucked in behind the Speights Ale House, in a modern building.

We had a reservation on the Friday evening the four of us visited, which was handy as it was pretty busy.

The menu features plenty of classic Italian dishes, including lots of shareable entrees. The arancini were crunchy on the outside and soft, smooth and just a little cheesy inside.

The antipasti board had a good selection of cured meats, marinated roasted vegetables with buffalo mozzarella, blue cheese, olives, cornichons and toast focaccia. There was just enough for each of us to get a taste without spoiling our appetites and everything was worthy of its place on the platter.

The orecchiette with brocolli, chilli, garlic and house made Italian sausage looked great and was swiftly consumed.

The rag├╣ bolognese with tagliatelle looked super rich and more tempting than your regular spag bol!

The spaghetti with pawns, rocket, sun-dried tomatoes and lemon had a more subtle look but still some great flavours.

I was the odd one out who went for a pizza, the Salmone, which was topped with hot smoked salmon, artichokes, capers, lemon mascarpone and rocket. The base could have done with a minute of two longer in the oven, but he toppings were great and the minimal cheese was perfect for this combo.

We had to give the set lemon cream with limoncello strawberries, biscotti and mint a try, as we have our own favourite strawberry based alcoholic dessert. The addition of the lemon and limoncello was great and it was a great end to the meal.

With a couple of drinks each and a cheeky limoncello at the end the bill came in at around $60 a head. The service was friendly and prompt even with most tables filled. Overall a great place to catch up with friends and get some great food at reasonable prices.
